In addition to the Status definitions for Orders, Line Items and Pieces and Material Batches, we have a number of statuses for our production runs - printing, post processing and shipping runs. This article takes you through these different statuses and explains when you would typically use / encounter production runs in this state.
Queued
Queued status indicates that this Run is on the schedule for this Workstation but it is not yet able to be started.
Typically this is because one or more of the Pieces in this run have prior Operations that need to be completed in a previous production run. For example, you cannot Depowder a build that has not completed Printing yet.
Production Runs in a Queued status are shown in Blue on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
Once all prior Runs for All Pieces in a specific Run are complete, it’s status will automatically update from Queued to Queued Work Ready.
Queued Work Ready
Queued Work Ready status indicates that this Run is scheduled for this Workstation and is able to be started as soon as the Workstation is available.
It is useful to highlight that this does NOT mean that this Run is the next scheduled Run for a Workstation. However, as all of the pieces are at the Workstation and the Run is ready to be worked on, it could be commenced ASAP - if the operations team decides that it should “jump the line” and be moved up in the Work Schedule.
Production Runs in a Queued Work Ready status are also shown in Blue on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
Queued Work Ready runs will progress to In Progress when a user indicates that the Run has started in Flows OR via the QR App.
In Progress
In Progress status indicates that this Run is currently being worked on at this Workstation.
This is understood to be either a person actively with hands on some pieces, doing some sort of operation OR it has been started by a human and is now running automatically at some Workstation like a Heat Treatment or a Vibratory Powder Removal Workstation.
Production Runs that are In Progress are shown in Orange on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
From In Progress, Runs will typically progress to Complete when the operation has finished.
Paused
Paused status indicates that this Run was previously started but it has been currently been stopped.
The most common reason for applying the Paused status is to allow some other Run to occupy this Workstation. For example, you may stop (Pause) a 2 hour Vibratory Depowder operation on Run A so that you can Urgently get Run B depowdered and moving on to its next operation. It is important to note that Paused runs do NOT take up a Capacity slot for a Workstation.
Production Runs can only be set to a status of Paused in the QR App. Runs that are Paused are shown in Grey on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
Paused Runs must be returned to In Progress before they can be moved to a status of Complete.
Error
The Error status is a temporary state for Runs where a decision will need to be made on that Run before it can continue production.
The Error status can be applied at any point and usually indicates that there has been some anomalous behavior that needs to be investigated by a Senior Operator or Manager to determine the impact to the Production Run. It most commonly arises from a run that is currently In Progress OR from Queued Work Ready if a Workstation is having issues when trying to start some Production Run.
Often, users will set a run to Error before messaging a more senior colleague via the Runs Comments section. They will review the Production Run and decide the most appropriate way forward based on the nature of the Error that has occurred.
Runs that are set to an status of Error are shown in Red on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
Once a decision has been made as to the way to progress with the Production Run, it can be set from a status of Error back to In Progress or set to Complete. Often, after assessing the Error, the Production Run will likely require a Production Change of some sort for the contents of that Run - either a Workflow Change, Non Conformance Review, a decision to Remanufacture the piece(s) or Scrap the piece(s).
Please note, subsequent Production Runs are unable to be moved to a state of In Progress until this Error state has been resolved.
Complete
The Complete status is the End state for a Run. It means that this operation was completed on these pieces at this Workstation. Please note, it does NOT necessarily mean that the operation was successful, but it does mean that this operation is done for now.
Runs that are set to Complete are shown in Green on the various Tracking Tools in Flows.
Runs can be set to Complete only after being set to In Progress or Error.
Cancelled
The Cancelled status is automatically applied if some production change has rendered a Run unnecessary. For example, if you do a Production Change > Workflow Change to remove a second Polishing operation as it is not required, the previously Queued / Queued Work Ready Run for polishing will automatically be set to Cancelled.
Calculating
This is a system status that appears briefly when Production Runs are being created and should be ignored.
Hopefully this article has better explained the different statuses that Production Runs can be placed in as they progress through the production process. If you have any questions or suggestions for improvements, please email our Customer Success team at support@authentise.com
